How I designed LibreNMS monitoring into a Enterprise Network #part1

What is LibreNMS?

LibreNMS is an open-source network monitoring system that provides network visibility. LibreNMS is a community-based fork of the last GPL-licensed version of Observium.

Some key features of LibreNMS are:

  • Device Monitoring
  • SNMP Support
  • Alerting
  • Graphing
  • Various vendor integrations and API
  • Ability to integrate nagios plugins
  • Auto-Discovery
  • CDP/LLDP/OSPF information to detect neighbors

Few years ago I had to task to find a replacement solution to our old monitoring CA Spectrum. Main problem with CA Spectrum was that it provide us a real status data instead of looking into history. Sometimes we wanted to see what happend yesterday or during the night and most of the time that was impossible in Spectrum.

Drawing the topology to monitor more than 3000 devices:

And here is a dashboard.

In the next post regarding this, I will explain how I did the configuration and how the pollers are configured.
